Good idea.
The number of school districts in the U.S. shrunk from 117, 108 in 1939-40 to 17,995 in 1970-71. As I recall one of the principal justifications for this shrinking was the massive cost savings that would accrue. Did they materialize? But even if they did, there are other disadvantages of large districts that need to be weighed.
