With the realization this opinion is idiosyncratic, I could never understand the popularity of "Pride of the Yankees". Even as a kid, I found it maudlin and unrealistic.

The miscasting of Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig was profound - on the level of William Bendix as Babe Ruth in that bio-pic. Cooper, a great actor, was remarkably unathletic, at least when it came to baseball. Cooper was right-handed, while Gehrig was left handed.

They shot his baseball-playing closeups with everything in reverse, including the lettering on the uniforms, then reversed the film print so it would appear Cooper was left-handed. He still looked like an old woman trying to play baseball.
