"How the Asians became white"

My wife, who teaches high school, reports that her Asian students usually start out liking affirmative action. When she tells them that Asians aren't really a minority, they're surprised and dismayed.

I remember a fellow grad student who was Chinese wrote his history paper on the Chinese immigrants in California at the end of the 19th century. He was surprised to learn it was basically legal to murder them, as only a white man's testimony in court counted, so if you only had Chinese witnesses, there weren't any.

It's astounding that East Asian students ever favor affirmative action, because it always harms their chances in college admissions and in hiring. Show them how much higher they have to score than white people and especially NAMS (non-Asian minorities) in order to get admitted to selective colleges. East Asians do better in a meritocracy.
