"Postmortem"

Terrific--albeit depressing--short piece on the current condition of Venezuela. Includes several memorable lines, such as these:

Socialism is useless at everything except for smashing things in record time.

James Eccleton remarked on how the mighty have fallen. “Brazil is becoming Argentina, Argentina is becoming Venezuela, and Venezuela is becoming Zimbabwe.”

A society can survive the loss of things, but it cannot survive without institutions or the destruction of culture. Culture is to nations what an immune system is to people.

See also "Let's Watch Venezuela Destroy Itself".

And the news, nearly every day, reminds us that Americans certainly shouldn't be cocky. See, for examples, "IRS scandal merely tip of iceberg of agency's problems" and "The poetry of bad news around Obamacare".

Patrick R. Sullivan

I remember engaging in conversation with a Venezuelan blogger about a dozen years ago. I told him his country was headed where Chile had gone in the early 70s, and there was only one way to stop it.

He didn't want to hear it. Wonder if he'd be open to the idea now.
