I backup and use the cloud like crazy. Still, in the past 10 years [yes, I have one computer that old, with the original hard drive] I have had one failure, and it happened in the first 30 days. I test them hard for the first month or so.

Anyway, that encompasses, one way and another, some dozen hard drives with, to date and fingers crossed, a single failure, and it was easily overcome. I have at least 6 currently working hard drives over 4 years old. I don't have anything on them I particularly care about losing at this time, but they all still work.

Caring for them properly probably helps at least some.
