Last night I finished James Gleick's book "Chaos" (my head hurts a bit)
It is an excellent book and does a pretty good job of explaining to the lay person how these multiple dimensions work. Think it is hard to get your head around 5 dimensions? Try 5-1/2 dimensions. Yes, you can have fractional dimensions.
I had also recently read his book on information theory, which is closely related, and found that excellent as well.
I need to cogitate for a month or two and go back and re-read both books.

Your head hurts because you are reading about 5.5 dimensions in 4-dimensional spacetime. The only known remedy is to read such books in 11 dimensions.
Unfortunately, once you enter 11-dimensional reality, AKA super-symmetric reality, the only exit from there is thru a 7-dimensional worm hole.
I am told by those who have been there that it is a very gnarly traversal ...
