40-some years ago I was a union member (closed shop). I meade decent money in the summers which paid for my college and law school.
I've been in a union hall when strike votes were taken. I've been on strike. I've walked a picket line. And I can assure you the professional out-of-town union agents do not have the best interest of the rank and file in mind.
Unions have evolved - inexorably - to protect the lowest common denominator of worker. Period.

Suppose for a moment that those on strike are right about deserving a $15 wage (whatever that means). They are barking up the wrong tree. Franchise owners are (usually) not the one percent. They are just making a living like everyone else. If it is so profitable, why doesn't everyone start a fast-food franchise?
The often quoted ''merely a 2.7 percent cost increase'' is misleading: maybe the profit margin is 2.7 percent. It surely isn't much higher. Take away half, or most, of the profit margin and how will the franchise stay in business?
Lastly: if a specific fast-food company has overflowing profit, why doesn't everyone buy shares? It must be a good deal, right?

I enjoyed hearing a McDonald's 'worker' today in the striking group at 8 Mile [the border between Detroit and Southfield] say that $15/hr could be easily done, since McDonald's makes "like 500 billion in profits every year." People that ignorant are pretty easy to take advantage of.
And having been in 4 different unions over the years, let me assure Joe R. that at some point, even before protecting the "lowest common denominator of worker" they begin to protect the "phony baloney jobs" of the union officials.
