The post to which Thompson links, by Eugene Wei, is excellent. Clear and interesting even to a non-economist. I find this remarkable: "Amazon could have had a margin of zero and still made money." But maybe it's unremarkable to someone who knows business.

Also, Apple depends on, to some extent, being 'cool' and that has a history of fading.
