I don't find this surprising. Think Japan with what amounts to a gerontocratic, quasi-Marxist government. Without the resources, roughly, per capita that Japan had in 1990 or so. How has that turned out for the Japanese? How much worse will it be for China? What happens if it's a lot worse?
