"How to Become a Librarian"
Some of the book-loving folks going to graduate school in the humanities might want to consider this instead.

Two things: 1) I teach especially my grad students to understand that there are few things more to be desired than a really good research librarian when you're writing/doing research. The good ones are godsends to the pressured researcher. 2) A few years ago I had the opportunity to teach at what is now Dominican University in the Chicago area, and they had [I believe still do]one of the best MLS departments in the country. I got to see the syallabi and reading load and such for the grad students, and believe you me it's not for the faint-hearted. OTOH, the students in the program were among the most interesting it has ever been my pleasure to know. Intelligent, questing, driven to do things properly. It's a great discipline for generalists who really, really like order.
If my wife hadn't gone into stats for a profession, I think she would have returned to grad school to become a research librarian.
