SI's 2009 Sportsman of the Year . . .

. . . is Derek Jeter. A nice story. (Evidently Jeter contrasts sharply with some other folks in the news recently.)

I wonder if, along with his family life, this doesn't also reflect that he was drafted in something like the 12th or 15th round? I.e. he wasn't praised to high heaven until he proved himself.

Albert Pujols is in a similar situation. The Cardinals drafted him in about the 15th round. No other team wanted him much because [honestly] he wasn't "built like a baseball player". I remember the Cards starting him at third base. He wasn't a butcher, but he wasn't really a third baseman, either. He is apparently, however, a fine man, father and human being.

Compare and contrast, particularly, basketball and football stars. They get lauded to high heaven from around the time they're 12 or so.

Jeter was drafted in the first round, sixth overall.
