The fact that a particular provider of "cloud" services fails to provide proper reliability/availablility/security doesn't mean the whole concept is bad, anymore than one software disaster (and there have been plenty) means that software is useless. Companies looking at using cloud computing need to take a serious look at the prospective vendor and also ensure that appropriate Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are in place.

Something very similar to cloud computing, in the form of commercial timesharing services, has been in place for decades, and some of these services have been used for very serious mission-critical applications. It's interesting that few journalists writing about "cloud" have looked at this history.
